In 1852, Fort Massachusetts, the first fort in Colorado, was built to protect settlers in the San Luis Valley, but it was abandoned when Fort Garland was completed in 1858.

The 1859 Pike’s Peak gold rush brought thousands of hopefuls to Colorado, but when they didn’t strike it rich quickly, most left in disgust. Charles Baker persisted, and in the fall of 1860, his party of prospectors reached the rugged San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. They found flakes and gold dust but were soon forced to leave the mountains by approaching winter storms and frigid cold. They returned the following summer and found small amounts of gold but couldn’t locate the source. When the Civil War began, they headed east to join the Confederacy or the Union.
